Yesterday, I made a huge pot of Cooked Ground Turkey to put in the freezer for easy slow cooker meals later. By huge, I mean over 12 lbs of ground turkey. As long as I’m cooking ground meat anyway, it is the perfect time to make taco meat with ground turkey.

I made a large batch of taco meat so we could have left-overs. With teenage boys, left-overs are more rare than Sasquatch sightings. This recipe could easily be divided if you’re not trying to feed teenagers or gorillas. (I realize gorillas are mainly vegetarian. It was a joke. LOL)
Whenever I can, I try to make extra to freeze. This taco meat freezes really well for a super easy meal on another day. I usually put the frozen taco meat into a pot with a bit of water (roughly about 1/8 cup of water) to gently warm it. Microwaves would work as well, but I am not a huge fan of microwaved meat. That’s just my personal preference.
I like the versatility of taco meat. Taco meat can be served with hard taco shells, soft tortillas, tostada shells, over nachos, in a baked potato, in a taco salad, or countless other dishes. Any way you choose to serve it, it will be delicious.

Turkey Taco Meat
Ingredients
- 1/4-1/2 cup Vegetable Oil
- 1 cup Frozen Diced Onions & Bell Peppers (or desired amount)
- Cajun Seasoning Blend (I use Tony Chachere's)
- 3.5 lbs Ground Turkey (or your favorite ground meat)
- 1 TBSP Chili Powder
- 1/2 tsp Ground Cumin Seed
- Cayenne Pepper (optional)
- Canned green chiles (optional)
Instructions
- Heat the oil in a pot large enough to hold all of your ingredients. My mother frequently goes through 3 or more pots as she adds ingredients.
- Add onions & bell peppers to the heated oil.
- Season the onions and bell pepper with about 1/2 tsp of Cajun Seasoning.
- Stir occasionally to prevent burning & sticking.
- Once the onions are translucent and wilted, add your ground meat.
- Season the ground meat with about 1 tsp of Cajun Seasoning, all the Chili Powder, & the Cumin.
- You may add Cayenne Pepper for extra heat, if you wish.
- Stir occasionally to prevent burning until the meat is nice and browned.
- Adjust the seasoning to your liking. I added another 1 tsp of Cajun Seasoning.
- Serve
Scoop some taco meat into a hard taco shell or soft tortilla and add your favorite toppings. I love lettuce, tomatoes, guacamole or avocado, salsa, and shredded cheese. Taco meat is also delicious topping a taco salad or stuffed into a baked potato. Yum!
