Many thanks to Angel Studios for providing a sample of the product for this movie review of The Shift. Opinions are 100% my own.
Synopsis: In The Shift, a dystopian drama and sci-fi thriller, one man is faced with infinite worlds and impossible choices. When Kevin Garner meets a nefarious adversary known as The Benefactor and refuses his offer of wealth and power, he must escape an alternate totalitarian reality. With survival on the line, Kevin fights to make it back to the world he knows and the woman he loves.
My opinion: As someone who misses good old-fashioned morals to stories, I was excited to see a great ending moral that is incredibly relevant to people today while being dramatized in a way that is wildly creative while also looking like a snapshot into the lives of most people right now. I was watching a dystopian drama that could never happen while mesmerizing at the too-close-to-home potential future (and present) realities that take place in this fictitious world.
There were many moments in the movie where I almost felt like the camera was on me or people I know well. They did an excellent job at depicting the difficulty of walking in godliness during circumstances that are heart wrenchingly burdensome.
Not a movie for younger children, but an excellent date night movie. This is a great movie to bring friends or family members who don’t like Christian films. Great for starting conversations about eschatology and current events.
