When I was just a little girl barely even speaking, I was singing jingles from the commercials on the television. I would sing on the swing set. I would sing while I ran. I loved to sing. I sang often, and most of those songs were commercials. I would sing about any advertisement that filled our television screen.
Folgers coffee’s famous jingle started in the 80’s. I was considerably older then being in the upper elementary grades, but I was still singing the jingles of all the popular commercials at the time. When I hear, “The best part of wakin’ up,” I can barely stop myself from finishing the line. To this day, I find myself singing along with the Folgers jingle anytime I hear it.
Folgers Jingle Contest
For the last couple of years, Folgers has held a contest to allow fresh new talent to reinvent their classic jingle in a new and unique way. Songwriters, musicians, garage bands, and novices are invited to create a song blending the new with the classic. Fresh new lyrics and melodies are welcome as long as the classic line, “The best part of wakin’ up is Folgers in your cup!” is included with the classic tune. You can even check out some of the past winners for inspiration. Country music singer and songwriter Chris Young has teamed up with Folgers this year.
The best part! This isn’t just for up and coming new artists. Anyone (with few exceptions like employees of Folgers) can submit a video. Have you ever heard a ditty on the tube and thought, “I could do better than that!”? Now is your chance. Show us what you’ve got! Grab some friends and collaborate. Organize a jingle-writing party. Bond with your spouse. Have fun and let your creativity soar.
Now, you just need to upload a video of your BEST version onto their website. Five semi-finalists will be selected between February 27 and March 19. These semi-finalists will get to have a mentor session with Chris Young before the online voting. One winner will ultimately win a prize of $25,000.
But I am not a songwriter!
Even if there is not ANY scenario in which you can picture yourself having a good time writing the Folgers jingle and performing it, you can still participate! After all the videos are submitted, a panel of judges selects their favorites. Then it is your turn to judge!
You can cast your ballot online to help determine who will come out on top. Voting will start on March 27, 2017 and continue through April 24, 2017. Every vote cast is an automatic entry to win prizes valued at up to $10,000.
